(It's been one year since I made a news thread, oops)

Merry Christmas/Festivus/whatever holiday you do or do not celebrate!

2017 was a pretty busy year IRL for most of us - according to forum statistics, our busiest month was in June with 1671 total posts, meaning our post rate has been a little …

Forum Bug

Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

The Loyalist and the Spy Empty The Loyalist and the Spy

The Loyalist and the Spy

Early morning sunlight filtered in through the perfect, freshly washed window as I stared at the equally pristine celling with its ever-oscillating fan. Already, the heat of the day opposed the feeble fan and its attempts to cool the room. The smell of smoke and flame drifted up from the kitchen where Aunt Thalia @Kane tried in vain to contain her nerves on such a day as today. I threw the covers off the bed and stood on the even wood floors before sauntering down to the stairs. The smell grew stronger and stronger the closer I came to the kitchen. My bare feet made little sound on the black and white floor tile as I walked through the high doorway. Aunt Thalia stood over my cousin Therese straitening a purple and white polka dot bow in her mousy brown hair. The pan left on the stove practically belched black smoke into the entire room but my aunt was completely oblivious to it all.

“You’re burning the breakfast again,” I said as I turned the fire off to try to salvage at least some of whatever it was she was trying to make for us. The contents of the pan were so blackened that it provided no clues as to whatever it was.

“Oh yes thank you dear!” Aunt Thalia said as she rushed over from the table to see her beloved meal blackened beyond recognition. “It was supposed to be pancakes for the two of you.” Her words quivered as she frowned down at the floor.

“It’s fine Auntie. Besides, we should eat light today for nerves.”

My hands brushed over the cabinet pulls before I opened it to reveal a few apples waiting innocently to be eaten. I pulled one out of the cabinet and showed it to Therese, my shoulders rising as if asking a question. She nodded her head eagerly as she gave me a thumbs up. My face pulled into a smile as I walked over and kneeled in front of her. I presented the apple to her as if it were my most prized possession in the world. She giggled before she took a bite out of it.

Therese had lost her vocal cords around the same time Aunt Thalia had taken me in. It had been a virus that ravaged her throat and nasal passages until it went away on its own. Not a single medicine the doctors recommended could combat it before it was too late.

Aunt Thalia watched the pair of us with a sad glint in her eyes before she interrupted us. When she took me in after my parents’ death, she had wanted her daughter to grow close with me because she had no siblings of her own.

“Casimir, can you change for the…ceremony,” She whispered as she scrapped the burned pancakes out of the charred pan. Ever since her victory fourteen years ago, she had refused to say the very word that had started all of her pain and nightmares.

“Of course,” I said with a respectful nod before I turned to leave the room. As my bare feet graced the cold marble threshold, I turned back to give Therese a wink and a smile. She smiled back and waved at me before she glanced down to finish her apple.

The stair banister creaked slightly as I made my way to my room. The mirror in my room reflected back every single movement I made to get ready for the Reaping. I changed into a simple blue shirt and a pair of khaki pants before I ran a hand through my thick, mahogany colored hair. Today used to be the day where my parents would always wear their nicest clothes like any other citizen. But they weren’t like any other citizen. They had hatred and passion in their hearts against one single entity, The Capitol.

“Casimir, It’s time to leave,” Aunt Thalia practically whispers from the foyer downstairs. Even from a story above her, I could practically feel her nervous energy and see her little fidgeting motions to distract herself from the day’s events.

Oh my goodness, Kane! I know this is late, but I just want to say that this is so well-written, and I love the attention to detail you gave to this piece. I'd love to read more in the future!
