Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

Re: Infinity's Row: Character themes!

I found my final villain's lyrical theme.

Yes, it's Lorde, and I know it seems kinda cliche, but bear with me - the lyrics actually do represent this person's past, as well as thoughts and emotions, quite well.

Now, I can't do a lyric breakdown without keeping the gender a secret, so I'll go ahead and spill: my last villain is a woman.

Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat (Lyrical Analysis for Adrian's Final Villain):

I’m a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm.
And the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold,
My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones,
It keeps my veins hot, the fire's found a home in me.
I move through town, I’m quiet like a fight,
And my necklace is of rope, I tie it and untie.

(This unnamed character has a positive image of herself, but keeps mum about it. The rope could allude to why she's so silent about herself.)

And now people talk to me, but nothing ever hits home
People talk to me, and all the voices just burn holes.
I’m done with it (ooh)

(This points to her social issues. She doesn't have many "friends" per se, but she has people that talk to her. But she can't find a good social connection to someone, and she may be at the point where it doesn't matter now.)

This is the start of how it all ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I’m speeding up and this is the red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart
We're at the start, the colours disappear
I never watch the stars, there’s so much down here
So I just try to keep up with the red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart

(In this stanza, it's revealed that she had some sort of popularity in N'al Ren, but something had happened which caused her to go below the radar. But now, she's gaining momentum in her own, new world.)

I dream all year, but they’re not the sweet kinds
And the shivers move down my shoulder blades in double time

(This is a little hard to interpret, but essentially, the woman has new plans for certain people in particular. And they're not that pretty.)

And now people talk to me, I’m slipping out of reach now
People talk to me, and all their faces blur
But I got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison
And I’m locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me
I’m done with it (ooh)

(Part of her plans are revealed here - she has a vendetta against a certain couple of people (can you guess who?), and she definitely has a strategy for revenge against the wrongs one in particular committed.)

And this is the red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart
And this is the red, orange, yellow flicker beat-beat-beat-beat

Actually, I think this line is a reference to The Hanging Tree, in which it says,

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Wear a necklace of rope,
Side by side with me.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

where they're referring to being hanged, thus the 'necklace of rope'. I always thought of this line as sort of an act of taunting defiance. That she's wearing the symbol of execution and casually tying and untying it, as if saying her fate, her life and death, is all in her hands. It sounds to me like that would fit with the character you've described this far in the lyrics and stuff.

BUT HEY, it's all personal interpretation, right?

Well, my original intent was to attribute the song lyrics to my upcoming IR character (not at all talking about HG), but...

xD Trust me, I've read the books.

Yea, I get that (it's in the thread title and stuff), but there's still the original meaning of the song as well. I just wanted to throw in an opinion about how the line could also be attributed to another character trait Smile

Florence's Theme!

Lyric Meaning:
Feeling like a loser
Feeling like a bum
Sitting on the outside
Observing the fun
Florence just joined the Row and hasn't had very many opportunities to prove herself worthy, she just sits and watches.
Don't get on my bad side
I can work a gun
Hop into the backseat baby
I'll show you some fun
Just don't make fun of her.
These people are weird in here
And they're giving me the fear
Just because you know my name
Doesn't mean you know my game
Florence doesn't know what to think of the row yet. They don't know what to think of her.
I look myself in the face
And whisper "I'm in the wrong place"
Is there more to lose than gain
If I go on my own again? (On my own again)
She doesn't know if she should leave the Row and go off on her own again.
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside...
We're inside Florence's thoughts! Very Happy
People are connecting
Don't know what to say
I'm good at protecting
What they want to take
She doesn't really know how to make friends

These people are weird in here
And they're giving me the fear
Just because you know my name
Doesn't mean you know my game

I look myself in the face
And whisper "I'm in the wrong place"
Is there more to lose than gain
If I go on my own again? (On my own again)

Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside...

All I know is I cannot pretend
So I'm sitting on the outside again
She pretty much knows she doesn't belong.
On my own again
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside (again)

On my own again
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)
Inside the outsider (on my own again)

Inside (again) [x6]

So I found this theme that serves not only as a theme for a character very soon to make his debut, but also as the general theme for an upcoming story of mine called Infinity's Row - Rebellion, which basically covers what Gentry did during Arker's War.

I'm not explaining the lyrics, but I did bold ones I thought to be particularly important for the character.

Spoiler:
You long to set the world straight
But you will fail if you wait or hesitate
So take aim and pull the trigger back

There was a time when I knew of love and amity
But it faded like the warmth inside a falling tear

Is it a crime to see fault in our humanity?
Why do we create this cycle of hate, breeding more fear?

There’s a pain deep inside of me
And you’re struggling to stay alive
But if we last I know we’ll live to see a brighter tomorrow

You long to set the world straight
But you will fail if you wait or hesitate
So take aim and pull the trigger back
Through every fear that you fight
You’re giving life to a spark of crimson red
It burns bright just waiting to ignite

As our impulses ring aloud, this world’s evolving to the sound of a new beginning

It cries at last, that relentless sound I know so well
Always deafening but I can never pull away
The die is cast and you can’t restart or change the past
But if given only one more chance could you carve the way?

I can feel it waste away inside
But the fire in me hasn’t died
And I would rather sell my soul than watch it all slowly fade away

I’m sick of being afraid
And living by these mistakes that I have made
But I’ll change that with these hands of mine
Believing in something more
I’ll carve a path through that rusted doorway
There’s still more that’s still worth fighting for

Our battle cry is rising higher as raw emotion fuels the fire, piercing through the night sky

The shooting stars fall upon the darkness
Until the skies are pitch black and starless
But when the world is reborn the curtains open wide

You long to set the world straight
But you will fail if you wait or hesitate
So take aim and pull the trigger back
Through every fear that you fight
You’re giving life to a spark of crimson red
It burns bright just waiting to ignite

As our impulses ring aloud, this world’s evolving to the sound of a new beginning.

Re: Infinity's Row: Character themes!

Post by WritingBookworm on Mon Mar 30, 2015 1:08 am

So since yesterday, March 29th, was the equivalent of Gentry's birthday, I have decided to post a few of her themes in her honor!

Spoiler:
Hands up high, raise them high
And cast your worries to the sky
There's no doubt not one doubt
As I make my wish and let it cry out

The very first verse expresses Gentry's wish to truly be free, and not just to be free to join the Row and such -- to be free of worry, of sorrow, and pain, and her desire to shed it all for a better life.

If I gathered all the love in my heart that grows with every passing day
I would find a confusing puzzle that changes and rearranges

It doesn't look like it at first, but her relationship with others can be very confusing. Before the events of Infinity's Row, the moment she trusted others was the moment they would leave her. She's scared of others abandoning her, and of simply being forgotten by them.

Will I ever find my place? I'm not sure
Or will I forever feel insecure?
And the moment all the questions fade I notice my tears
But can't hold them back

Gentry has a deep-set insecurity in her. Though she certainly feels like she's found her calling by joining Runite's Row, she questions whether she really measures up to the likes of the other members.

Maybe it's too late I've lost my chance
All of my questions shall go unanswered
Will I keep fighting to find the light or will I descend to a bitter end?

Hands up high raise them high
And cast your worries to the sky
If you can't stand then take my hand
And I will rise to fight by your side
My beating heart is burning on
And as it races I realize
There's no doubt not one doubt
As I make my wish and let it cry out

Yet despite this, Gentry is quick to put on a friendly smile. She's completely excited to be friends with others, because she doesn't want them to suffer, or ever feel alone in ways that she has in the last. In turn, she is given the strength needed to pull through and face another day with her head held high.

I have always danced to my own beat
But you always throw me out of sync
'Cause around you I am holding back and I'm mastering a fake brave smile

Gentry is independent, yet completely dependent. She's independent in that she can of course stand up for herself and face her challenges head-on, but dependent in the sense that she needs to feel support. However, she doesn't feel like she can quite expose the dependent side of her for fear of being advantage of in some way . . . so she doesn't.

Maybe it's too late I've lost to my dreams
All of my wishes come true only here
If I wake up now I'll lose this moment
I fear my dreams will fade around me

Her dream of being in Runite's Row was a major part in her life, and so she's always thought of it as something like in the books she's read -- a life filled with invincible heroes that just lead a romantic life. Now she's learned that it is not a simple romantic life. Even so, it is the first time where she has been in a place where she feels like she belongs -- and one where she feels loved, thanks to Elias -- and like Elias, she's afraid that it will all one day just shatter to pieces.

I'm so close yet so far
I can't reach out to where you are
I'd give my heart I'd give my soul
But some things are not in our control
Your hand's not meant for me to hold
And I'll be lonely when you're gone
I'm aware so aware
Only through my memory you'll be there

It's not the destiny that I've dreamed of
And as I cry I know this is goodbye
How can I ever reach you
When I can't even see the sky

She has a bad habit of comparing herself to others. She's skilled at seeing the good in others, but not always in seeing the good in herself, which can cause some mental turmoil in her. Gentry longs to be as confident as some of the others appear to be, or simply to be as good as them. It leaves her to wonder sometimes -- with such skilled people already in Runite's Row, does she belong? Is she truly even needed? She tries to shove these questions away by briskly responding, "Yes", but the questions don't go away for long.

Hands up high raise them high
And cast your worries to the sky
If you can't stand then take my hand
And I will rise to fight by your side
My beating heart is burning on
And as it races I realize
There's no doubt not one doubt
As I make my wish and let it cry out.

Yes, Gentry does have some insecurity issues she needs to get over. Yes, there are some days that she just wants to sink to her knees and sigh. But no matter what, she manages to summon great willpower and pull through whatever life may throw at her. She faces these challenges head-on (whether it be an undead army or great inner turmoil over killing someone), and vigorously swears to herself that she'll pull through them. And you know what? She does. And each time, Gentry comes out of it a much better person than she was before.

The second theme is an instrumental of Run Boy Run by Woodkid. There is a lyrical version of this, but I like the instrumental one since it suits her so much better. The intensity might take some of you guys aback since this is Gentry we're talking about, but the instrumental fits her well -- it truly captures her raw courage and determination, her willingness to get down to business, her quick-paced fighting style, her honest passion and vigor, and, most importantly, the way she knows the dawn will come even after the starless night.
