Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

“With great power comes great responsibility.” – Spiderman

△ ▽ △ ▽ △ ▽ △ ▽ △ ▽ △

△ ▽ △ ▽ △ ▽ △ ▽ △ ▽ △

Somewhere beyond space and time…

“Are you confident this is the best place to do this, my liege?”

“No. But we don’t have a choice anymore. At this point, it is the only place.”

The clanking of steel boots echoed off the cold, hard floor as a bipedal figure paced back and forth in front of a series of holograms and blinking screens. It was not quite human, but rather close to it – it had the complexion of a blue sky that was beginning to darken with an oncoming storm, white eyes that glowed faintly in the dimmed lights, and bizarre, tribal-like patterns that criss-crossed its slender yet imposing body. The black cloak that draped the figure billowed softly with its owner’s movements, which had stopped in front of a complex control panel.

The being’s companion, similar in features (save for a plain complexion and yellow eyes), drummed its fingers on the arm of its chair. “Is it really fair to do this, Va’drah? To risk another world? Especially what happened to the last one…”

Va’drah shook its head, closing its eyes at it remembered the events of the past realm. “Nothing is fair anymore, Daalus. You know this as well as I do. We’re fighting a war against the primal forces of the Great Beyond. We learned from our mistakes this time, and our allies are counting on this to succeed.”

Daalus leaned back in its chair, contemplating the scenes playing out on the screen. Before the two creatures, the nonchalant lives of countless humans played out in a vast, beautiful city. Businesspeople carried onto their jobs, children played in the park with friends and family, lovers took each other in their arms and made their eternal vows. How little they realized that their world was about to shift forever.

Daalus had grown numb to the countless Upliftings their race had performed. Kingdoms, continents, planets and solar systems had been called forth to fight their own evils with the help of Va’drah, Daalus, and their people, but so many of them had fallen as well. And then, there was the matter of the Dark that slowly encroached upon them…

“It’s time.” Va’drah opened its eyes, gazing at the skyscrapers that jutted out across the screens. “I can sense a culling. Thousands of destinies await our command.”

Daalus sighed. “And so, we shall deliver from evil. Or, try.”

A blue hand reached out to a series of buttons on the dashboard before it.

Within moments, the course of humanity would change forever.

September 30, 2018. 30 days after the Uplifting.

~Blythe~
I pushed my sunglasses up a little further on my nose bridge. They were the big kind that celebrities wore, with the lenses obscuring a fair portion of my face. More importantly, they obscured the rays of the sun which, currently, was at its apex.

The sun shed its light on the city before me, citizens bustling like ants through its streets, and the shadows that trailed behind them. The downtown was the pulsing heart of the city; the denizens of Mount Superior carried their own eclectic eccentricities through the veins wherever they went. Artists, suited businesspeople, students, doctors, et cetera - and, of course, the newly-minted superheroes.

Mount Superior had always been full of freaks, but now, it was on an entirely different level.

Ever since the Uplifting, the world had changed irrevocably; the formerly heavy weight of assuring that my own abilities remained deep within the shadows was gone, and I found myself in the company of far more superhumans than I had ever thought would exist.

I still couldn’t decide if it was a good or bad thing.

The public was still largely undecided. Such a profound change was sure to leave people confused; after all, the entire structure of our society had now changed.

With all that had happened and despite the sharp contrasts that colored the humans in the streets before me, it was odd to think that they all had the same red blood flowing through them. The Uplifted were still clumsily playing with their new abilities like children did with their freshly-unwrapped Christmas gifts. From what I had gleaned, we legacies were mostly relieved.  As for those who were still left untouched, well. . . I wouldn’t care to be in their shoes. Some would embrace the powerful protection offered by the new superhumans, while others would grab their pitchforks.

The assumption that one would use their newfound powers specifically for the greater good was nothing more than an imprint of naïveté left in us from those cartoons that kids watch. We all shape ourselves to be the heroes of our own story, but that rarely translates to a hero of mankind.

After all, why would I offer the society fruits of the labors that they had isolated me for in the first place?

My eyes zeroed in on a certain building in the downtown; its ostentatious suggested the value of the items within it without any dollar signs. The building had an air of history through its architecture, which could make our job easier or harder, but I was sure that the security wouldn’t be anything to sneeze at. Still, nothing was perfectly guarded, and my eyes had already scoped out a few possible weak points.

I pushed myself onto my elbows, legs swinging off the side of the building that I sat on. I turned to Payton, pushing my hair over my shoulder as my eyes sought hers.

“So, tonight, right? What time again?”

-Yve-

"It is an honor and a pleasure to be with you all on this historic day," I said, my accented voice reverberating slightly from the microphone onto the street before the stage. I stood before a magnificent white marble building, its elegant columns and artfully rendered arches all casting a small shadow over the gathered crowd. The crowd was mostly reporters, but there were a few artistic luminaries mixed among them. I ran a hand absentmindedly over my white dress accented with blue poppies before turning slightly in my creme colored heels and gesturing at the sign above the door which read Blair Center for Performing Arts.

"The Blair Family has always been a massive supporter of the arts and works of this city's citizens, and now we renew that special partnership with this newly renovated center," I said before I sauntered over to the red silk ribbon covering the entrance and cut it in one flourishing movement. As the audience clapped, the snap and click of cameras and sudden flashes accompanied them. Possing for just a moment, I gave a small wave to the crowd before I made my way to my waiting car. It wasn't a moment before the door clicked behind me that we were already speeding away and my husband spoke up from the other rear seat.

"That was wonderful, darling," he said, his hand running up and down my back as he spoke. He had been too hungover to give his speech, his words still slightly slurred and his eyes rimmed with black. Of course, that hadn't happened by accident but rather by my design. It was time I began my turn on his campaign trail. I leaned over to kiss him, making sure my hand rested on his thigh as I did so.

-Amory-

I swirled the paintbrush in my hand idly as I looked out at the sun-soaked pond I was supposed to be painting. The sun pierced water glinted back each time a koi fish swam under its rays. The canvas before me contained only the reeds and stones at the edge of the pond. I had stalled when it came time to actually paint the water before me even though I had painted this pond a thousand times within the past thirty days.

-Isidore-

I looked down at the streets far below our penthouse's railed balcony, my sunglasses obscuring my gaze as it jumped from car to car and person to person. On the table beside me rested a host of strange objects from ancient manuscripts to shards of crystal that changed color each time you looked over to an aged gramophone that played "The Harlem Twist" softly, the music drifting over the sky. Turning to the table, I sighed slightly in annoyance as I snapped my fingers impatiently. Not a moment after I snapped, a tall elven creature appeared, an iron collar affixed around his throat.

"Clear all of this out of here. Where is the tea I requested a moment ago?" I asked even though I knew he could not talk to me. He set to work clearing the books and crystals before he scurried off. It wasn't a moment before another creature appeared, clad in the same collar, with a platter containing a silver teapot and two crystal dishes for sugar and cream. Setting down two blue and white patterned cups and saucers, she went to pour it before I stopped her.

"And the scones?" I asked, my tone growing more clipped by the moment. She held the silver tray to her chest, bowed slightly and shuffled away to get them. Sitting down in my chair, I waved my hand impatiently, and the teapot began to pour its contents into my cup before the cream and sugar did the same. Listening to the record play, I looked down as a small tea spoon spun lazily in my cup.

~Nico~

The constant buzz of the tattoo gun cut through all the other noises in the small studio and the only other thing I could hear as I traced over the lines being the small grunts of the guy in the chair. He was doing pretty well for his first tattoo, a few twitches here and there but nothing that completely fucked up my lines. The music playing softly over the speakers could finally be heard again as I clicked off the machine, wiping a cloth over the fresh lines and making sure I hadn't missed anything.

Once I was happy with it I sat back and motioned for him to look, watching as his eyes lit up with The Look and I inwardly sighed in relief. It was a pretty simple piece, an anchor with rope coiled around it in memory of the guy's late grandfather, but he still looked pleased.

"Dude, this is amazing!" he said, looking back up to me with a huge smile, "Thank you so much, I love it."

"No problem," I said, lips twitching up into a small smile before it fell back. He kept going on about how much the image meant to him and how cool it looked and I nodded along, half listening as I ran my fingers up and down my arm. I got too lost in thought, though, and felt the small flower tattoo start to peel off of my skin and I jumped, quickly pushing it back down and thanking God that he was too focused on his new ink to notice.

These powers were really starting to get on my nerves. Sure they had been helpful, this sword had saved my ass a couple of times already, but it was terrifying to have them off of my skin. If I ever lost any of them I don't think I could live with myself, this was the only piece of Justin I had left and I couldn't lose any more of him than I already had.

The guy suddenly stopped talking and I pulled myself back from my thoughts in time to at least give him a half smile and return his handshake before I stood, "Alright, let's get you wrapped up and I'll ring you out."

~Liz~

I typed away at my computer, stopping to grab some fries from the box next to the keyboard before going back to the screen. I had been lucky enough to get some money for fixing this girls phone so I could get something to eat. Now I was just searching google for articles on all the recent superpowers showing up. There were so many stories now and I was just hoping that I could find anyone who needed some help. I couldn't really just go off as a superhero on my own, my parents would find me that way, but I also really wanted to get off the streets. My only hope was to keep doing little odd jobs and hope that something would come up that I could do.

~Anzeti~

I sat in the park in the middle of downtown Mount Superior, eyes closed and head tilted back to enjoy the energy of the sun. For a moment, sitting down on one of the large rocks and the heat from the sun beating down on me, I could almost picture that I was back in Egypt. Of course, the moment was ruined the second an automobile's horn was blown and the illusion faded as easily as a mirage. I scowled and pushed myself to my feet, swiping my staff from the rock before making my way down the paths. I could feel eyes on me as I walked but I ignored them all. Everyone in this blasted place stared at me whenever I went past them, eyeing my naked chest and traditional clothes. None of them understood, but they would always continue to stare. The gods blessed me with this body and covering it with unnecessary clothing would be a waste. They left me with these clothes when I was alone so I would wear them, no matter what any of these people did or said. These people took me away from my home so I would do what I could to feel closer to the gods.

As usual I kept my eye out for any trouble, wondering if there would be any criminal activity that would need attending to. These people rejected the gods that they should be worshipping but I would fulfil my duty as their son and protect their people, even if they do not believe.

Sarah gulped hard as she looked over her audience.

"Th-th-thank you all for coming..." she stammered out to the roughly twenty or so men and women who sat before her, every single one clad in black, hooded robes. She didn't know any of them, but she knew she had to make her case to them. Simply telling them about Mythulhu would be easy, but just twenty people wouldn't be enough- lots of people had to know, and in order to achieve that, she needed loyal followers who could spread the word. The few who had attended, though not the audience she had hoped for, would be enough to start with. Perhaps it was a good thing; she didn't want to attract too much attention, since she wasn't sure if it was exactly legal to use the school auditorium for cult meetings on Sundays.

She cleared her throat, jumping a bit when the microphone caught it and boomed it through the room. Shakily, she reached over to the lid of the piano, where she had left her notes.
"So, as the flyers said, we're all gathered here to discuss how we'll spread the message of Mythulhu, and I was thinking we could start with-"

One man raised his hand, cutting her off.
"Wait, this isn't the cult for Mephisto the Skull-lord?"

Sarah paused for a moment. She wasn't ready for this.
"Um, no, this is the cult for Mythulhu the Insatiable."

The small crowd started audibly grumbling as they stood up from their fold-up chairs, and shuffled towards the exit. Sarah raised a hand in protest, trying to get them to stop.
"Wait, I can still-"

Leave them, Sarah, the deep voice inside her head boomed. They have no interest here; this failure was not yours.

Sarah tried to smile.
Thanks Mythulhu. What should I do now?

By now, the audience had all left the auditorium, shutting the door behind them. As soon as the doors shut, a crowd of naked, fish-like humanoids spontaneously appeared, filling the seats left empty by the cultists.
You are still not a charismatic speaker. You must practice. I do not yet have the power to summon real Deep Ones, but non-corporeal ones will provide the illusion of an audience.

Thanks, I guess.
Sarah picked up the open water bottle on the piano surface and took a swig from it, before it setting it down and beginning to read aloud from her notes.

~Julian
Well, Vegas had been a bust. Sure, the first few weeks there were great - there was easy money to be made. However, once the casinos caught wind of his operations, things got bad. Let’s just say they didn’t take kindly to being robbed. Julian had barely gotten out alive; once they’d figured out where he was staying, they had come after him. If it wasn’t for the beast with supersonic hearing that he’d been accustomed to having guard him, he probably wouldn’t be still be here. But as he flew north over the Nevadan desert, having taken the form of a falcon, he wondered where his next stop would be.

~Rex
Yawning loudly, Rex tried to get out of bed. He was so tired - he’d been up late chasing some guy for 20 minutes last night, until the guy finally gave up. With his X-Ray ability, it wasn’t too hard to keep up with people no matter how fast they were. But it had definitely exhausted him; he could still feel his poor feet pounding.

Rolling out of his sheets, he began going through his daily routine, putting on some regular clothes before heading out.

~Leona
Who said a trip to the ancient history museum had to be boring?

Leona flashed a smile at a camera that couldn’t see her as she bent the light around her to hide herself from view. A trip to the bathroom had allowed to escape from the cameras for a quick moment, and by the time anyone realized what she was doing it would be too late.

Waiting near the door to the restricted access area, Leona watched the guards make their rounds. She’d already watched them earlier for a while, and now she was ready to make her move.

Creating a small trick of the light near to where she was standing, Leona got the guard’s attention easily. He began moving towards her position to investigate, and in just a few moments would be walking out of sight of the cameras for just a moment due to a large information board. Once he came around it, it was a simple matter of extending the light bending to him and chopping him in the back of the neck from behind.

With a thump, the guard began to fall. Leona did her best to catch him, but he was heavy. Using all her strength, her light bending wavered as her concentration broke, but she was able to save it by letting the guard fall to the floor softly. Phew, that was close.

Grabbing the keys from his side, she dragged him over as quietly as she could to the door. Thankfully it wasn’t too far away and there weren’t many people in the museum today.

After unlocking the door, she dragged the guard inside and finally dropped the light bending that was hiding her from view. Sighing loudly, she bent down. She still wasn’t used to holding out that long, having to catch the guard so the sound wouldn’t be heard almost got her spotted. She didn’t know if there were any cameras in here, but hopefully no one would notice in the time it would take her to go shopping for something nice.

Moving around the restricted area, she passed lots of different things from all ages of history. Bones and weapons and all sorts of things were spread out everywhere. However, that wasn’t exactly what she was here for. As she made her way deeper in, she began to feel the hair on the back of her neck raise. Someone was probably going to notice that she was in here any moment - she probably had less than two more minutes.

As she continued walking further in, she walked past some Native American artifacts - obsidian arrow heads and the like. Nice, but not what she was looking for.

Frowning, she was wondering if she should just give up and leave before she was spotted when she noticed something glinting off in a dark corner of the room. Taking a closer look, she spotted it - a large gold and diamond necklace. Unfortunately for her, it was locked up in a thick glass case. A placard next to it offered a description - apparently, it was the necklace of a Pharaoh’s wife in Egypt’s history. At the end of the necklace was a golden scarab beetle with green jewels embedded in it that didn’t really go with Leona’s look, but perhaps she could pawn that part off.

“Well, I hope they don’t mind too horribly if I borrow this. It really should be out for the world to see,” Leona muttered to herself as she created a sword made of light to slice through the glass case.

Pulling the necklace out of the case, Leona smiled. However, her smile only lasted a second - the alarm began going off a second later. Great - looked like she was out of time. At least it hadn’t been an entire waste of time.

Making sure to clasp the jewelry around her neck properly, she quickly took off. She made it back to where she’d left the guard. Unfortunately for her, he was already awake again. She didn’t have time to bother with him though - a wave of her light sword kept him at bay as she ran through the door.

Outside, there were 3 guards waiting for her, pistols drawn. Just what she needed.

“Freeze!” one of them shouted, voice shaking. “Drop your weapon!” More were probably on the way - they probably hired someone more threatening with more than just a gun.

Regardless, Leona wasn’t going to wait around to find out. She used the sunlight coming in through the large windows near the entrance to blind the guards by increasing the intensity in front of them. Like the idiots they were, they fired at random, almost hitting her in the process. However, she quickly shifted her light sword into a shield, blocking any stray bullets as she ran towards the entrance. The police would probably be here any moment - she needed to make it somewhere hidden, and fast. But where?

Thinking quickly, she decided to head for the back of the museum. It was surrounded by a wall, but that alone wasn’t going to stop her if she got trapped. Being out on the street was not an option with this huge necklace though.

{ Payton }

"Mmhm. Sun starts setting at 7:16 PM so 7:50 should be a good time," I say smoothly, a calm washing over me as I briefly met eye to eye with my partner in crime. Tonight would not be any different from our previous jobs, so I wasn't worried in the slightest. There were too many times where Blythe had proven to be a suitable and reliable partner. And I, well I knew I was capable enough.

Still, getting cocky was never a good thing. It was a common downfall in the greatest of people, often leading to ignorance and death. Neither was a good thing, clearly. So, even though I knew we were more than capable for tonight I kept in mind of all the things that could go wrong.

That meant alarms, the police getting involved, cameras, security of all sorts ranging from guards to laser traps. And now, with the Uplifting, there was a higher chance of having to deal with someone with powers that could stop us.

But logically, we should have the upper hand.

"Sound good to you?" I add after a brief pause, looking back to our target building.

I froze when I heard the distant sound of alarms, cocking my head to the side and trying to figure out where it was coming from. With a frown I realized it was in the direction of the museum and quickly changed course, wondering who in their right mind would commit a crime there in the middle of the day. Usually most criminals would rob places in the middle of the night, but I would not complain. This would only make it easier for me to stop them.

"Mm. Yeah, that was what I was thinking." The words were smooth as I said them, with any form of nervousness unapparent. Considering how many times Payton and I had been successful, there wasn't really all that much to worry about. We had managed to overcome any complications during our operations in the past; I doubted that this time would be any different.

Still, there were the new heroes from the Uplifting.

They were like untrained puppies, so eager to play the role of the heroes that they had all idealized since childhood. At the same time, though, most of them were still far too clumsy to do so effectively.

Annoying.

"Did you want to do anything between now and then? I think we have all of the bases covered for preparation, unless I forgot something." Which is unlikely. "I am kind of hungry, though."

I contemplate her sentence. We had everything under control for tonight so we may as well have prepared ourselves mentally and physically. And, if we were both focused on our empty stomachs then we wouldn't get anything done.

"Shall we take care of that, then?" I offer.

"Yeah, that sounds good," I said, smiling. Even though Payton and I were business partners, I did enjoy spending time for her. I suspected that we wouldn't have lasted very long if one of us didn't.

I glanced back to the skyline once more, with the hot light of the sun reflecting back off of a particularly glass-covered building. The sight sears itself into my eyelids, and I feel the beginning of a headache in the back of my head.

Right. I should take care of that before tonight, too.

"Can I meet you there? I just forgot about something that I need to take care of." I rose from my seat on the edge of the building, dusting off my hands and adjusting my sunglasses once more. "It shouldn't be long."
