Forum Bug

Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah/Other religious holidays!

*wipes sweat from brow* Whew, political correctness is a lot of hard work. But it has to be done.

ANYWAYS, we did it - we (almost) survived 2016 which, I think we can all agree, was pretty damn terrible in many ways.

Regardless, it was a good year on the forums - we've met some new faces, set out …

"Woah, alright," I said, jumping in after Shayla. How the heck was she getting us out so easily? I helped Adair out and kept back to make sure everyone else got out too.

Re: Harwell's Institute for the Fairly Exceptional

- Lucille -

Her tone sounds accusatory, which means I'm even more confused. Now I'm sure I did something wrong. But what? I make a point of scrunching my eyebrows, trying to indicate to Gretchen that I'm not sure of what she means.

- Valerie -

"Finally," I mutter, feeling liberated from the cramped space as I crawl out of the vent. I peer over Shayla's shoulder. No guards, at least from what I can see.

Unfortunately, Empathy couldn't say he was surprised.

Granted, the room before him was more than what he'd imagined it could be. He hadn't expected doors on ceilings nor upside down staircases, this garbled, surrealist reality. But he should have expected it. He and the rest of the Harwell's administration had only bits and pieces pertaining to Vincent's past, but they had been able to use those pieces to infer about his origins.

It wasn't good.

Did Vincent know? That the more they went ahead, the closer they would come to his origins? Harwell knew assigning Vincent to this specific mission would be a risk. Now, Empathy saw what he had feared from the beginning; that the same risk was about to reap its consequences.

Would that be a bad thing, for Vincent to find out where he came from? It wasn't as though Empathy wasn't certain of his origins himself. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing.

The trouble was, Empathy couldn't tell if it would be a good thing.

For the time being, he had to stay close. "Indeed it does." Still keeping close to Vincent, Empathy began to travel up a staircase. The staircase rose normally, at first, but then twisted into a spiral that eventually lead to a door on the ceiling. He kept walking until he reached a point in the staircase in which the stair faced the ground. Appearing to hang from the staircase upside down, like a bat, Empathy waited. He did not fall. Just as Vincent had suggested, gravity wasn't what it was outside of this room.

He looked down at the rest of the group. "Come up," he said. "It's safe. You won't fall."

Slade was somewhat surprised by the bitter tone of Gretchen's voice and decided not to pursue the matter.
Perhaps she's reliving the memory. I shouldn't have brought it up.

Eric jumped out shortly after Valerie, more than happy to have stayed behind her.
"Where to now, boss?" He asked Shayla in a mocking tone of voice.

Gretchen closed her eyes to roll them. She didn’t want to be angry, she really didn’t.

“Yes, Slade,” she sighed, calming herself, “tell them.”

"...tell us what?" Annie inquired, quickly becoming interested.

"Alright then..." Slade began, thinking it over. "...where to begin?"

"So my father had a brother... who is her father, okay? He's my uncle. And my dad was her uncle. They were pretty close, and even worked at the same place. Then... there was an accident."
He glanced over at Gretchen, making sure she wasn't too distressed by his description.

"Neither of them made it. Same day, same place. I remember it like it was yesterday."
He sighed, the thought of it bringing pain to his heart.

Gretchen crossed her arms, and added quietly:

"Ever wondered why we tend not to talk about our moms? They're hot messes. Mine's a workaholic that made her mother move from England to raise her kid for her."

I cringe. Annie and I weren't the only ones who've lost family. We've all lost someone.

Maybe I have more in common with them than I'd once thought.

"I'm sorry," I say. "That's terrible. But . . . your mothers are still alive. You've still got them. And you've got each other. That's something, right?"

"That's true..." Slade remarked, nodding. "She's not the same anymore, but I'm so glad to have her and my sister."

He sighed, looking down thoughtfully and rubbing his brow.
"I should call them soon."

Gretchen didn't have anything to add, so she uncrossed her arms and stood a little straighter.

"I'm going to find a vending machine." she sighed, clearly looking for a reason to leave the room, "Anyone want anything?"

"I'll take a snickers." I jump; I'd totally forgotten that Maxwell's still here. His eyes plastered to the screen in front of him, he's been rather quiet. Has he been paying attention to anything we've said? "I'll pay you back, Gretchen."

"No thank you," I say. As far as I can tell, Annie, Slade, and Gretchen have all laid themselves completely bare. I'm the only one who hasn't. Sure, I mentioned that Lance died, but that's only one small cog in the machine.

They deserve better. I take a deep breath. " . . . How much do you guys need to know about me?"
