Forum Bug

Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

*wipes sweat from brow* Whew, political correctness is a lot of hard work. But it has to be done.

ANYWAYS, we did it - we (almost) survived 2016 which, I think we can all agree, was pretty damn terrible in many ways.

Regardless, it was a good year on the forums - we've met some new faces, set out …

Once Slade had been lifted off her, Annie took a step back. Regret was quickly taking hold, and her eyes were still wide with shock.
"O-Okay..." She stuttered out, voice filled with uneasiness. She half whispered "I'm sorry" as the elevator's doors closed between them.

She had been separated from them. She considered waiting outside the lobby for Gretchen to come back, but immediately decided against that. She knew things would be awkward between her and Gretchen, and the brunette was right when she said the team needed her as soon as possible. Once she was outside, she broke into a sprint to meet up with the others.

---

Slade was stunned. For a moment, he had no words, but he eventually found them as the elevator dinged up.
"This is all my fault, isn't it?"

Re: Harwell's Institute for the Fairly Exceptional

Listening to the bell as they were lifted past each level, Gretchen let out a deep sigh that completely emptied her lungs. She tried to breathe away the fury, which she had been letting out inappropriately. And she knew it was inappropriate. She really did. It was just..

Remembering Annie's somewhat heartbroken look, she chastised herself mentally.

Of course she feels, moron. The brunette thought, She's human, too, she just wants you to think otherwise.

Slade then spoke, and Gretchen gazed at him sadly. She shook her head a bit and let out a single laugh.

"No, of course not," she answered quietly, "it's mine, I just," she paused, "I was so angry I couldn't stop..Birdman," she shrugged, not knowing what else to call him, "and I took out my anger on you. And Annie."

The doors opened once more, and she led the blonde out into the hallway.

"I was a bitch, I admit it. I, I just- I didn't want to hide behind a tree again."

Looking down at the card in her hand, the brunette looked for the room with the corresponding number. Once they had found it, she opened the door.

"Which bed is yours?" she asked.

- Maxwell -

"Oh, don't go there," I say to Slade says it's all his fault, keeping my voice calm. I can't afford to be heated, especially after even Annie went far enough to snap at the Normans. I picture myself freezing into ice, and in the process losing all the heat and warmth that lies underneath my skin. That allows my voice to be numb and cold as I continue, "Don't wallow self-pity. It'll do no one any favors."

The elevator beeps as it reaches the second floor. I press a button on my wheelchair, starting forward again, and then swerve my wheelchair over to 2207. I point at Slade's bed. "Just set him there."

Slade sighed.
"Listen, Gretchen, you could never be a- you know, I don't even want to say the word while thinking of you. You are by far the sweetest and kindest person I've come to know, and I honestly believe that you have been completely justified in everything you've said. I've been pigheaded."

The implications of what Gretchen said began to sink in, and it worried him.
"I didn't want to hide behind a tree again."

"Don't put yourself in danger, okay? Please... you'll be alone out there, stay safe. Don't take unnecessary risks."

---

Annie rejoined the Martial and the others a few blocks down.
"Gretchen should be back soon. What have I missed?"

"Okay, then, let's compromise - you're a pighead," Gretchen sighed with relief once she had set Slade down, "and I'm a bitch."

She stood next to the bed, scanning Slade's form for a moment before placing her hands on his shoulders to force him to lay down.

"I'm sorry I snapped at you." she admitted, still leaning over him, "I'm sorry I snapped at Annie. I'm sorry I couldn't save Luc. And I promise all three of you will get better apologies when we have the time, okay? I gotta go, though."

The teen stepped away from her cousin, before turning to Maxwell. "Thanks for keeping an eye on him. I get the feeling this wasn't how you wanted to spend the mission."

Striding towards the door, Gretchen smiled slightly, "Be back soon, boys!"

"Nothing," the Martial said to Annie as she returned. "Just be prepared."

Fortunately, within the minute, Gretchen had also appeared from the hotel. Assuming that meant Slade and Maxwell were safe, the Martial turned around and took off running to the Bank, albeit not as fast as she could. She could run at a superhuman speed, so if she actually ran as fast as she could, her students wouldn't be able to keep up. But she still went as fast as any human in peak condition could run. "Let's go!"

- Maxwell -

"You were reckless," I say to Slade as I flip my laptop open. The screen awakens, and I immediately begin prodding at the security cameras, so they can allow me to see what's going on. "Reckless, and stupid."

I pause.

"But also brave," I say. "I . . . I'm sorry for being a dick to you."

Annie immediately broke into a sprint again to follow the Martial.
I just hope we can get there on time.

---

Slade gave a small wave as Gretchen stepped out the door. He knew she most likely didn't see it, but it felt nice anyway.
Please don't let this be the last time I see any of them...

He began to make himself comfortable, carefully adjusting his pillow to rest on when Maxwell spoke up. He paused and listened.
"Honestly, it's fine. You're just the kind of person who likes being alone. I didn't understand that at first, but now I do, and I can respect that. I'm sorry you had to end up babysitting me."

He stopped again to think about his actions. Brave? All he remembered was foolishness.
"Besides, isn't bravery just an excuse to be reckless and stupid?" He retorted. "My behavior was rash and unjustifiable. If anything, I've lowered our chances of recovering Lu- I mean, Swiftshot."

(This was originally gonna have a lot more stuff in it but I just need to post at this rate so here. I'll try to fit the other important bits and respond to other people throughout the next few posts.)

"You think I was going to let you guys be alone, after what just happened with the Falconer? I already have enough problems leaving Smokescreen and Sentinel on their own."

The Martial kept running, the students in tow. Ten blocks later, there was the scene of the crime, moving trucks unloaded and empty. So the robbers were all inside.

She kept an ear out. A few approaching police sirens whined, but she didn't hear any gunshots. Hopefully, that meant none of the civilians had been harmed.

The Martial twisted her own ring, and in a flash of light, she was in a clean-cut, olive green uniform of any high-ranking military officer. "Prepare yourselves!"

- Maxwell -

"It can be an excuse," I say. "But not always."

After long last, I gain access to the footage again. As the windows unfold on my screen, I look up at Slade. "Would you like me to move into the other room? So you can get proper rest? Or would you rather prefer to see what's happening?"

(Understandable, perfection can't be rushed.)

Annie twisted the knob on her ring, instantly applying the Harwell's uniform and face mask.
"Do you think the Falconer is coordinating with the robbers?" She asked the Martial, speaking slightly louder over the sirens. "Or is this just some awful coincidence?"

---

"Maybe that'd be best," Slade conjectured as he laid back and sunk into his pillow, "that way I can try and sleep a little, and I won't be a bother to you."
