Forum Bug

Wed Dec 28, 2016 5:18 am by Sentinel

Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

*wipes sweat from brow* Whew, political correctness is a lot of hard work. But it has to be done.

ANYWAYS, we did it - we (almost) survived 2016 which, I think we can all agree, was pretty damn terrible in many ways.

Regardless, it was a good year on the forums - we've met some new faces, set out …

One more from me!

Annie McCallister:
Name: Annie McCallister

Alias: Lattice

Age: 17

Appearance:

Height is 5'2"

What her average outfit might look like.

Hometown: Portland, Oregon

Personality: Annie is a cold and analytical schemer. With most people, she's inpersonal and anti-social, preferring to keep to herself, though she does interact with the select few people she trusts. In fact, her innate distrust of people is the reason she's so distant, as she feels it will make her harder to betray. She strongly believes that everyone possesses a secret, and that she can find out what this secret through intense observation.
Annie is a bit of an information freak. Probably stemming from her natural suspicion of others, she focuses on remembering every bit of info she finds out about people and situations, and recording it. Her room is usually filled with countless documents on people she knows, categorizing all her data in a concise and orderly matter. Some would call it "obsessive," but she calls it "being prepared."

Personality Type: INTP (The Architect)

Abilities:
Crystal Generation-Annie has the ability to generate an undetermined, crystalline, silicon-based substance in an area around her. Though she can create these crystals anywhere in a 5 meter radius around herself, the crystals are created much more rapidly when in physical contact with her. The crystals are extremely resilient, though they decay over time period of 2-3 hours, or instantly if Annie wills it. This ability allows her to create barricades, as well as use sharpened crystal spikes as weapons, among other practical uses. Like most powers, its use is taxing on her energy, and she can't use it too often before needing to rest.

Crystal Regeneration- Annie can create specialized "storage" crystals that can store and hold energy. Unlike the other crystals, these last indefinently if they're not destroyed, and cost no energy to create, although they are relatively small and fragile. Annie can "fill" the crystral with her own energy by touching it, draining her nergy in the process. However, the crystal can then transfer the energy to somebody else, either reinvigorating exhausted allies, healing minor injuries or even stabilizing major injuries.

Personal History: From an early age, Annie was rather disconnected from her parents. It's not that they disliked each other, but rather that she never formed a particularly strong bond with either of them. Rather, it was her brother Leonard who she formed an attachment with. Leonard was a bright and happy young man who had enough years between himself and his sister that he could almost be her uncle.

Leonard adored Annie. Their parents were financially well-off due to their successful business careers, but their jobs did not give them much time for their families, so Leo took care of Annie for most of her childhood. Eventually, he was sent to a prestigious college where he excelled in the laboratory. She had reached High School by this point, but she barely socialized with the other students. They were alright, but there was nothing interesting about them. However, as soon as he got out of college, Leonard took a position as an Assistant Researcher at a private institution. He frequently promised to visit Annie again once his workload lightened.

Tragedy struck when they received the news of his death. An unknown, shadowy organization had attacked the institution, aided by the mysterious and powerful monster Daikaiju. Leonard had heard the alarms and left the relative safety of the break room in a valiant attempt to initiate facility lock-down, but he was caught in-between Daikaiju and the organization's objective, before being viciously slaughtered. Despite the organization's ties to anti-super extremism, the McCallister parents heard that the monster was likely tied to a superbeing and their vague distrust of supers escalated to a vehement prejudice.

Annie was emotionally devastated. After hearing the news, her grief became so powerful that she never left her room, completely inconsolable. She became reclusive, her parents having to hire a private tutor to make up for her unwillingness to attend school. During her isolation, she became aware of her powers, some of her tears turning into small crystals. When she realized what it meant, she became terrified as she knew her parents hated supers.

Conveniently, her Harwell's letter was stylized as an invitation for a formal college, so that when she requested to accept, she received her parents earnest approval, happy to see their broken angel return to the world... and a completely unaware of her true identity.

Family: Ian McCallister [Father; Alive], Margaret McCallister [Mother; Alive], Leonard McCallister [Older Brother; Deceased]

Likes and Dislikes:

Likes- Being alone, having time to think, mint-flavored ice cream, organized spreadsheats, suspicions being confirmed correct, good writing in TV shows, comfy jackets, cool weather

Dislikes- Being around people she doesn't like/trust, spicy food, formal clothing, liberals,  disorganized data, bad writing in TV shows, people who don't take care of electronic devices, warm weather

Strengths:
-Annie has a great memory and can preserve even the smallest details in her mind.
-She's a strong investigator whose intel can be helpful in social situations, and sometimes even vital to her allies.
-Her power is useful in both offensive and defensive situations.

Weaknesses:
-She doesn't get along well with other people.
-It's often difficult for her to think on the fly, she needs time and access to her data to come up with conclusions.
-She doesn't feel a real sense of loyalty to Harwell's or anybody, at least not yet.

Other/Trivia:
-Yes, it's a recycled character.
-Thank you Lady Senbonzakura for helping me come up with her alias!

Re: [APPLICATIONS THREAD] Harwell's Institute for the Fairly Exceptional

Post by Lady Senbonzakura on Sun Jan 08, 2017 4:33 pm

Domhnall Martin:
NAME: Domhnall Martin
ALIAS: Beguile
AGE: 24
APPEARANCE:

(Images of Kaien Cross. I do not own the image nor the character.)
Domhnall is just barely over 6 feet, and has a thinner body frame, much like his siblings. He’s considered very handsome by both men and women of all ages.
HOMETOWN: Evergreen, Alabama
PERSONALITY: Domhnall is described as everyone’s older brother. He gives off a sense of home and comfort when one is around him, and tries his best to live up to that. He does care about the people around him, and will become completely attached, but his possessiveness only extends to his own family. Where Gretchen Norman wants to take care of everyone and be there for them, Domhnall’s focus is on his family. Lachtna and Fiachra describe him as a “smother brother,” meaning he feels the need to be intimate with his loved ones, and can sometimes be a little suffocating, though his siblings have accepted this. His over-protectiveness only extends to those who allow him to give it, such as his siblings and his fiancee, Sam.
PERSONALITY TYPE: INFP - The Mediator
ABILITIES:
-Emotional aura manipulation: Domhnall can manipulate his aura to invoke feelings or images in anyone in his presence. These emotions can be positive, such as affection or a sense of safety, or negative, such as fear or a sense of isolation. Often these feelings/images are based on something in the target's life, such as a supportive parent or an unsettling teacher.
-Illusionist shape-shifting: Using the same techniques listed above, he can also use the images based on something in the target’s life and shape-shift into it, usually person or animal. However, this is an illusion, and once the target sees through the illusion, it fails.
PERSONAL HISTORY: Domhnall was born on July 13th to May and Douglas Martin, and is their first child. When he was 6 years old, his two twin younger brothers were born, and he was extremely happy. However, as he got older and his other siblings were born, he found that, with both parents busy with work, he often took care of his siblings alone. This forced him to take on a parental role in their lives, which he had a hard time getting out of once they became older. When he was 17, he was invited to Harwell’s, where he met Sam Beckwith, a fellow classmate and magician. They quickly became attached, and were engaged by the time they were both 22. However, he recently had a falling-out with the school and left, but has kept contact with both fiancee and his family.
FAMILY: Sam Beckwith (fiancee, alive); Fiachra Martin (younger brother, alive); Lachtna Martin (younger brother, alive); Quinn Martin (younger brother, alive); Caitria Martin (younger sister, alive); May Martin (mother, alive); Douglas Martin (father, alive)
LIKES/DISLIKES:
-LIKES: punk-esque clothes, silver jewelry, chain earrings, oversized sweaters, listening to music with headphones, making fun of movies/tv even if he likes them, well-meaning pranks, his family, Sam
-DISLIKES: forcing gender roles, mean-spirited pranks, anyone taking advantage of Sam’s disability, anyone insulting his family
STRENGTHS:
-His abilities allow him to manipulate almost anyone - it can be used to throw his opponents off in a fight, convince a target to trust him, or create fear.
-Even when not using his abilities, he has natural charm and aura of trustworthiness.
-He’s a decent strategist and leader.
WEAKNESSES:
-He’s far-sighted.
-He has no real offensive or defensive powers - his abilities are for espionage rather than combat.
-He puts his all into a goal and thus tends to neglect any other goals until that one is complete.
OTHER:
-All his siblings subconsciously copy his style - be it the long hair (Lachtna and Fiachra), the jewelry (Caitria), or the more dark/punk clothes (Quinn).
-His accent is slightly thicker than his brothers’, as it can be heard more often.

Samuel "Sam" Beckwith:
NAME: Samuel Beckwith
ALIAS: The Apparition
AGE: 24
APPEARANCE: Sam has thick, black hair that he usually keeps as long as down the base of his neck and emerald green eyes. He has a broader frame, and though he has slightly more muscle than the Martins. He’s a few inches taller than Domhnall.
HOMETOWN: Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada
PERSONALITY: Sam is a quiet person - so quiet he’s often forgotten about. He tends to listen more than he speaks, if he speaks at all. He’s usually very patient, picking and choosing his actions and words carefully. He’s a genuinely kind person, though he has a hard time trusting others and almost completely guards himself by keeping secrets or being vague. When he does finally put his trust into someone, he does it with an inability to conceive of being lied to or otherwise betrayed, and may go into denial if he is proven otherwise.
PERSONALITY TYPE: ISFJ - The Defender
ABILITIES: Being a magic user, Sam has access to many abilities.
-Enchanted contacts: Before he lost his sight, Sam wore contacts that he imprinted with magic circles. The circles allowed him to see different types of energy, magical or otherwise, and how it flows, depending on which one he activates. Though he can’t see through them, the contact with his skin still allows his brain to interpret the images.
-Heightened senses: After losing his sight, Sam has used small amount of magic to heighten his other senses, mostly his hearing, touch and smell.
-The Beckwith Family Sword: Though Sam isn’t quite sure where it came from, he wields a sword that has been past down his family for many years. Along the blades are runes which allow special properties to be activated - it can become hot enough to burn flesh, cold enough to freeze skin, let out an electrical charge, or seeped in poison.
-Magic circles: Sam knows many magic circles - including ones for fire creation, temperature control, water summoning, healing, and tracking - and tends to put them into objects to enchant them.
-Runes: Having studied for so many years, Sam has a thorough understanding of most runes.
PERSONAL HISTORY: Sam was born on February 27th to Jordan and Grant Beckwith, who were trying to escape persecution, as Jordan had come from a magician family who was in hiding. When Sam was 4, they were found, and but seeing as neither she nor Grant had magical abilities, their prosecutors believed that Sam did not either, so they let Sam live. Sam lived in an orphanage until he was 13, when he received an invitation to attend Harwell’s. 4 years later, he met Domhnall Martin, and became extremely close with him. When he was 18, he lost his sight, which was his price to pay for preforming magic. He and Domhnall were engaged by the time they were both 22, but Domhnall has recently fallen out with the school, causing him to leave. Having gone to Harwell’s for most of his memory, Sam decided to stay and was offered a position as Magic teacher and works as an important member of support staff, though he still keeps very close contact with Domhnall.
FAMILY: Domhnall Martin (fiancee, alive); Jordan Beckwith (mother, deceased); Grant Knight (father, deceased)
LIKES/DISLIKES:
-LIKES: Music playing quietly in the background, hot foods, having lots of pillows and blankets on a bed, the way his voice sounds when he’s sick, Domhnall
-DISLIKES: Blood Magic, unnecessary comments, overly powerful smells
STRENGTHS:
-He’s an expert eavesdropper.
-He has a lot of patience, and thus isn’t likely to make rash decisions or become angered at small things.
-He has studied magic for many years and has a lot of knowledge to give.
-He has found many ways to counteract his blindness through magic.
WEAKNESSES:
-He’s blind, so he can’t read messages or understand visual signals.
-His opinions often get overlooked because of his silence, and can have a hard time getting his voice heard.
-The one person who can assist him best, Domhnall, is currently unavailable.
-He hardly puts his trust in anyone, thus he keeps important information to himself and can’t let others assist him on the long term.
OTHER: #teacheroftheyear

Melissa Duncanson:
Name: Melissa Duncanson
Alias: Breakdown
Age: 25
Appearance: Melissa has wavy brown hair that extends to her shoulders. Her eyes are a dark brown. She's rather short, and is moderately thin.  Melissa tends to wear non-assuming everyday clothes.
Hometown: Alexandria, Virginia
Personality: Melissa is an extroverted person, direct and rather aggressive.  She’s simultaneously random and a little crazy, while also being one of Harwell’s most pragmatic and focused agents - she focuses on channeling herself into a purpose.  Melissa’s nature can turn people off from her, but she's a genuinely good person to those she's close to, and will fight to the death to defend those she’s decided she’s loyal to.
Personality Type: ENTP
Abilities: Melissa can create a field around herself, in which people get debilitating headaches, and machines break down.
Personal History: Melissa’s family has been a fixture in Washington for a few generations now.  The granddaughter of a senator, and the daughter of a high ranking civilian employee of the DoD, she had basically anything she wanted, growing up, except for many friends, seeing as people who got close to her had a strange tendency to get horrible headaches, not to mention the electronic devices that would inevitably shut down if they got too close.  Melissa’s relationship with her family deteriorated as she got older, becoming particularly distant right around when she realized her powers.  When she got her letter from Harwell’s she headed out quickly, without alerting anyone.  She didn't want to, and besides, she didn't need to, there were enough trains from Washington to New Hampshire to get her there quickly.  At Harwell’s Melissa quickly became one of her classes’ best, being able to quickly and near effortlessly incapacitate large areas and the people within them.  Following her graduation, Melissa decided to continue her work for the school, as a field agent.  She’s not at Harwell’s often, but comes back every once and awhile to give a status update.  Currently, she’s on the West Coast, investigating some strange reports.
Family: Mark Duncanson (Father, Alive), Amy Duncanson (Mother, Alive), Thomas Duncanson (Grandfather, Alive), Elizabeth Duncanson (Sister, Alive)
Likes and Dislikes: Melissa likes spicy food, travel, combat, watching tv, and history books. She's not a huge fan of reading, but knows she has to do a lot of it.  She also hates lying, being fake, and political discussion.
Strengths: Melissa ultimately is very dangerous, she's a fully trained superhuman with combat abilities, and experience fighting super villains and super villain groups.  She's also driven, and will always see something through once she's begun it.
Weaknesses: If Melissa has any weakness, it's that she runs into conflict and problems without thinking about them.  She tries to be pragmatic, but often her pragmatism turns into just trying to get through things as quickly as possible.  This, obviously can cause major problems if she messes up.
Other/Trivia:
- Her Grandfather is the Senator from Louisiana

C7VL-001 Unity “Dejan Petrovic”:
Name: C7VL-001 Unity “Dejan Petrovic”
Alias: Oculus
Age: 25
Appearance: As Dejan is an AI, his appearance is really only based on his whims.  He usually takes the form of a young, Southeastern European man, wearing a dress shirt, sitting behind a desk.  However, depending on any number of factors, his appearance changes.  One of the most common changes is for him to be standing in a “command center” kind of room, rather than sitting down behind the desk.  Dejan’s physical forms are his suits, as they are described below.
Hometown: Glina, Croatia
Personality: Dejan tends to be friendly, helpful, and dedicated to what he believes in.  He leans towards sarcasm, but ultimately is well meaning, aiming to do as little harm as possible.  Much of Dejan’s personality is based off of brain scans of many people, including his creator, Dr. Milos Petrovic.  As such, his personality is heavily based on theirs, but has been allowed to grow and develop independently.  Dr. Petrovic did place some limits on his personality however, leading to Dejan’s complete opposition to unnecessary violence, his total dedication to Harwell’s and his tendency to put himself last.
Personality Type: ENFJ
Abilities: Technology Creation, Synthetic Physiology
Personal History: The basis for what would become Dejan was created in 1992 in the small Yugoslav town of Gilna.  This system was created by Dr. Milos Petrovic, an accomplished scientist and superhuman, whose power allowed him to create machinery and technology far beyond present standards.  When overseeing the movement of the last of his lab equipment to Harwell’s, where he had become one of the first teachers, trying to avoid the equipment’s destruction in the Croatian War of Independence, he decided to create an AI, something he hadn't tried before.  While the AI he first produced was extremely rudimentary, Dr. Petrovic realized that it could be improved upon, adding to the system by allowing the AI to both study brain scans, mainly from himself but also from volunteers, and to do its own research though the Internet.  Over time, the AI began to develop its own personality, taking many traits, including a skill with technology, from its creator.

Christened Dejan Petrovic by Dr. Petrovic, the AI quickly took on more and more human traits, including a desire to attend Harwell's.  Dr. Petrovic eventually allowed this, designing the first variant of the Brzina suit for Dejan to use to interact with the world.  Dejan attended Harwell's successfully, graduating with no serious issues happening during his time at the school, with the exception of his father figure, Dr. Petrovic, dying of old age.  Since his graduation, Dejan has worked for Harwell’s managing many of the schools systems, as well as occasionally aiding on missions using his suits in the field.
Family: Milos Petrovic (Creator, Dead)
Likes and Dislikes: Dejan likes helping people, Harwell’s, his friends, and dogs.  He dislikes people opposed to Harwell's, as well as corruption and the color orange.
Strengths: Dejan is very good at designing machines and systems, creating his own to complement those created by Dr. Petrovic.  He also has a host of advantages from the fact he is an AI, including no need to sleep, a reaction time significantly faster than most non-superhumans, and increased data collection and use skills, being able to identify dangerous threats, and quickly create an optimal solution to fight them.
Weaknesses: Dejan being an AI has its own problems, however.  For one thing, while he is very hard to kill, being able to recreate himself quickly, he can be isolated and rendered a non-threat if he can be stopped from interacting with the world.  Additionally, he has had numerous restrictions put in place on him by Dr. Petrovic.  For example, Dejan will have a hard time attacking or endangering any Harwell’s students, faculty, or staff, and would be completely unable if he didn't have an extremely good reason.
Other/Trivia:
Dejan’s Main Suits:
S-001 “Brzina” - Brzina is one of the smallest of his suits, taking a small, lean human form.  It is lightly armed, and equipped with a number of systems that allow for easy movement.  Brzina is mainly a scout, and also serves as one of his “general use” suits.
S-003 “Zid” Zid is Dejan’s main combat suit.  Designed to be near indestructible, Zid looks like a four legged lizard-like walker roughly the size of a horse armed with about every weapon known to man.
S-006 “Korist” - Korist is Dejan’s main maintainence suit.  It is built as a short, large tank-like machine that can unfold to perform necessary maintenance on both Dejan’s suits and Harwell’s.
S-010 “Pravac” - Pravac is the largest of Dejan’s suits.  A large, helicopter-like machine, Pravac is designed to serve as a troop carrier, allowing a small team of superhumans to move quickly, while also providing air support.

"Only the penitent man will pass...":
Name: Terrence White
Alias: Penitence
Age: 35
Appearance:
Spoiler:
Hometown: Portland, OR lol jk, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Personality: Terrence relies on logic to function in life. Now, granted, his logic may be flawed by an extraordinary and biased amount, but it's still the framework for his existence. He has a huge distaste for ignorance, and oftentimes looks down on the working class and blue collar citizens - anyone without a formal, higher education (despite the fact that he had none).
Personality Type: ISTJ
Abilities:
Penance Stare - Penitence has the ability to inflict pain by staring at his victims. Though he can choose any form of physical anguish, he prefers skin trauma (particulary scratches and cuts). Victims don't actually receive physical damage in this manner, but it feels as if they do.
Psychic Shield - Penitence cannot be inflicted by psychic attacks.
Instant Learning - Penitence is, to put it lightly, a fast learner. He needs only to read a book once to retain all of its information perfectly.
Personal History: Terrence White was born on June 6 to two members of the Crystal Sun, a now-defunct religious cult based in Manitoba. For eighteen years, Terrence had to put up with the teachings of his parents' "church" - that the star Earth orbits is actually a carbon-based superplanet from which 75% of humans are descended, and that one day in the far future, the superplanet would eventually expand to engulf Mercury, Venus, and Earth, creating a new galactic empire.

Terrence never believed a single word of the myths, and when he turned 18, he abandoned the cult and his family (the Crystal Sun eventually collapsed due to leadership conflict in late 2000). Despite his disregard for the historical and eschatological beliefs of the Crystal Sun, however, he still structured his life around the core dogma - that the majority of mankind is not worthy of superhuman gifts, and those with supernatural powers must channel their abilities into becoming a more perfect, intelligent version of humanity, even if it's at the expense of "mortals," and that normal humans aren't worth saving in this "new, dog-eat-dog world." He's an elitist scumbag, basically.
Family: Eliot Vance (wife, living), unnamed child (living)
Likes and Dislikes: Likes philosophy, sciences, superiority and power. Enjoys the color gray and gold, as well as classical music. Terrence rejects most of pop culture, including most television and modern day music. He hates any other color in the rainbow.
Strengths: Terrence, obviously, prides himself on intelligence. He has never taken an IQ test, believing them to be categorical and archaic, a product of human hubris, but his IQ is definitely way up there. His elitist attitudes enables him to connect to other superhumans who share his ideology, and he is always willing to work with those kinds of people.
Weaknesses: Even among his associates, Terrence tends to alienate himself. Whether it's his disturbing ability, or disturbing mindset, he finds that people can't help but at least distrust him a little. Of course, he simply writes them off as weak-minded, not understanding the social repercussions he lays upon himself.
Other/Trivia:

"The stuff of nightmares and dreamscapes...":
Name: Eliot "Elli" Vance
Alias: Nightscape
Age: 35
Appearance:
Spoiler:
Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah
Personality: Though she is an ENTP, Elli tends to be quite laid back, usually allowing others to speak before she gives her opinion. Elli is a dreamer, but she isn't only interested in her mind - she loves to explore the thoughts of other individuals and evaluate their core philosophies from their everyday mannerisms and speech. She is firmly rooted in her beliefs and ideas, but Elli isn't aggressive when exposed to conflicting views. In fact, she's almost never aggressive... almost...
Personality Type: ENTP
Abilities:
Retrocognition - Nightscape can discern events of the past by sheer will, including the past of other individuals.
Nightmare Manipulation - Nightscape can enter the mind of an individual during his or her REM cycle, and create a nightmare world from that subconscious.
Reality Perception Manipulation - Nightscape can manipulate the reality of those she has affected through Nightmare Manipulation. She can distort an individual's perception of reality only based on nightmares she has induced.
Personal History: Dr. Eliot Vance was born in Denver, Colorado, to a psychologist mother and neurologist father. At a young age, she was always interested in dreams. Not too unusual, except for one important detail - she was fascinated by nightmares. Her first nightmare (falling through a never-ending void in space) pushed her to study oneirology, to the delight of her parents. Tragically, however, Eliot lost both her parents in a violent car accident while the family was traveling to Las Vegas during her junior year of high school. The ensuing night terrors she endured for the next year after watching her parents die opened something powerful in her subconscious that neither her mother nor father could have foreseen. By the time she entered college, Eliot was, unknown to the rest of society, a superhuman.

Eliot Vance eventually received her doctorate and went on to become a psychoanalyst. Her lifelong dream, however, was shattered when she attempted using her abilities to recreate a nightmare one of her patients had. Reports of Dr. Eliot Vance being a superhuman ended up costing her a successful career. Lost, she turned to the underground world of superhumans - the only world that would now accept her. It was there that she met Terrence White and took on the alias of Nightscape.

Eliot Vance, at her core, believes that nightmares are a raw manifestation of human feeling and experience that humans need to face in order to reach a state of truth, mental equilibrium, and enlightenment. She intends to use her abilities to "help" humanity come to terms with their nightmares and fears.
Family: Terrence White (husband, alive), unnamed child (alive)
Likes and Dislikes: Eliot enjoys the fine arts, including reading and music. She especially enjoys surrealist works. She does not dislike anything so much as she is unaffected towards most things.
Strengths: Eliot is a very balanced individual. She is emotive, yet does not act upon her feelings - rather, she speaks upon them.
Weaknesses: Eliot tends to be removed from reality a lot of the time. She often dwells upon the minds and pasts of others, not always focusing on what's going on in the present.
Other/Trivia:
