Merry Christmas/Festivus/whatever holiday you do or do not celebrate!

2017 was a pretty busy year IRL for most of us - according to forum statistics, our busiest month was in June with 1671 total posts, meaning our post rate has been a little …

Forum Bug

Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

Harwell's Institute: Against Time

Post by Adrian on Thu Dec 08, 2016 10:21 pm

Inspired a bit by Writing. This doesn't exactly reveal a whole lot about my main character himself, but rather the dilemma he's involved in... unknowingly. This is about 5 or so years before the actual RPG itself, so in case you're curious about what I have in store for the RPG, here ya go. Enjoy!

"Here you go, boss. This is the latest update I could find." A broad-shouldered man, still wearing the gray hoodie and dark-tinted glasses on his head, slid a manila folder towards the other end of the desk.

The Boss opened the folder, revealing a single sheet of paper. He could already tell they did a sloppy job trying to cover their tracks.

Spoiler:

During testing periods from September 6, ████, to October 2, ████, Subject ██████ registered as "positive +" to ██ examinations that tested the presence of superhuman abilities, ███████ fluctuations, abnormal brain patterns, and more. Despite these results, however, government researchers at the time believed these anomalous properties would fade as Subject ██████ reached adulthood. It is the estimation of Project ██████ that these claims, while true at the time, are now unfounded, and Subject ██████ poses a high risk of danger for the human community. It is of the utmost priority that this fugitive is detained immediately.

Initial testing of Subject ██████ shows remarkable signs of:
* █████████████
* █████████ ███████ manipulation
* █████████ fluctuation

Subject ██████ is also considered a prime suspect in

Shades removed his hood, revealing his already-receding hairline. "The other page got left behind. But basically, it's information we already know about the boy. Nothing useful."

The Boss shook his head. "No. We know that they don't know where Vincent is." He leaned back in his leather chair - a gift from his deceased mother-in-law that was already feeling the wear-and-tear of stress. "Unfortunately, we have no idea either."

"How is that possible, anyways? I mean, he's a part of the Witness Protection Program for God's sake, shouldn't we check the system?" Shades adjusted his sunglasses - even though the sun was down and the two were in a dimly-lit room, he still insisted on wearing them. I thought the I in "CIA" stood for intelligence, the Boss always wondered.

"He was. We got rid of those records, among others, in 2000 after the Project went dark on us. We think that was around the same time the Christiansen's moved. We don't know where to."

"You know, it's kind of a damn shame." Shades leaned onto the Boss's oak desk, contemplating. "I was partially hoping they'd know something we don't. For a bunch of DHS veterans, this gig is really kicking our ass."

The Boss sighed, growing exasperated. "One, stop leaning on my desk," (Shades quickly propped himself back up on his feet.) "And two, this isn't a gig. We don't really know who we're up against at this point. These cronies are probably getting help from Shadow Creed at this point. This is a race against time, agent."

Shades drummed his fingers on the desk. "...what do you think they want with the kid, anyways?"

The Boss shook his head. "I don't know, but if they're right about him having superpowers, then that boy is in a lot of danger. Him and anyone he's affiliated with. Who knows what they'll do, or how far they're willing to go..." He rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Anyways, enough. You did good this week, Agent. Be expecting a bonus in your paycheck."

With that, Shades was dismissed from the gloomy office. Finally alone, the Boss leaned forward in his chair and switched on his desktop computer. It seemed he still had a lot of work to do. And time was running out.

I see somebody else is a SCP fan.

Anyway, good story! It's very intriguing.

(I'll admit that was an influence.

That and Stranger Things will have an influence on this plot.)

Thanks, you guys ^^ This has actually been in the works for a while, but it was Writing who got me motivated to continue the story. I can't wait to share it with the RPG and see what you all have in store for Harwell's!
