Thu Dec 28, 2017 3:57 am by Adrian

(It's been one year since I made a news thread, oops)

Merry Christmas/Festivus/whatever holiday you do or do not celebrate!

2017 was a pretty busy year IRL for most of us - according to forum statistics, our busiest month was in June with 1671 total posts, meaning our post rate has been a little …

Forum Bug

Wed Dec 28, 2016 3:18 am by Adrian

Hi all,

We're aware of a peculiar forum glitch that's causing some subforums to be locked.

Due to the lateness at this time, it might be a while before the glitch can be remedied, because despite my best efforts and as far as I can tell, everything seems to be working fine admin-side. It may have …

A Role-Playing Guide

Post by Adrian on Fri Jun 07, 2013 9:20 pm

What is an RPG?

An RPG is a Role-Playing Game. An RPG is when you take on the life of a character, whether it be an original character (One that you make up) or a pre-made character.

RPG's are a fun way to act out your fantasies of being a character in your favorite TV Show or Game.

There are also games that are RPGs, or sometimes, MMORPGs. MMORPG means Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Wizard101 is an example of that.

How can I make a good RPG Character?

Usually, the thread-creator will have a basic detail set-up made for you already, that looks like this, or something else, depending on what your RPG is based on. This one is based on Wizard101:

Character Name:
Special Abilities:
Main School:
Other Information:

Make sure you fill out the details completely, so other people will know how your character acts.

Avoid making a Mary-Sue or a Gary-Stue. Mary-Sues and Gary-Stues are basically over-powered characters that are very beautiful, dazzling, amazing, etc.

Mary-Sues and Gary-Stues are annoying and can make the RPG less fun for everyone else.

Can I have an example of a Wizard101 Gary/Mary Sue/Stue?

Yep. By the way, Mary-Sues are Girls, and Gary Stues are guys.

Here's a Gary-Stue:

Character Name: Jason Rider.
Age: ///
Special Abilities: Can mix school spells together.
Main School: He can use all school spells.
Secondary: He can use all school spells.
Third: He can use all school spells.
Equipment: Best gear in the game.
Level: 100.
Other Information: Is the most powerful wizard in the world. Can defeat Malistaire with a flick of his fingers.
Personality: Funny, never embarrassed, etc.
Looks: Very good-looking (Very Happy)

And see how annoying that character would be to other people...

Drake used a healing potion.
Jason used a super-evil spell of death so nobody could heal.
Drake died.

RPGs are fun because they are a good way to stretch your imagination and let yourself play around in your fantasy-world. Haven't you ever wanted to actually be the one fighting Malistaire with a majestic sword and an amazingly good-looking armor?

You can do that in RPGs. That's what makes them so much fun - you can be whoever you want to be, wherever you want to be, and do whatever you want to.

What is a Pre-Made Character?

Pre-Made Characters are characters that have already been created. For example, when playing a Wizard101 RPG, you could choose (if the rules permitted) to be Cyrus Drake, and then you could teach your students, fight off monsters, etc.

How long should my Role-Playing Post be?

It shouldn't be too long. If you want a scene, a long one, then you can do it, but it's generally best if you don't make long posts. Make some actions, meet up with other characters, etc.

If you have any more questions, post them here and I'll edit this post.

"if you made a thread of a RPG can you ask people to do certain things ????
Like for example get gold to learn their first spells ?"

Answer: Yes, but unless you establish that as a rule, the RPGers don't have to do that.
